Our generation

Some of the assumptions made from “60 minutes” are true, but not all. Particular things they said I can see as true but several assumptions are inaccurate. It is a fact that teens are constantly on the phone or text messaging, I have to admit I text message a lot. Texting is so easy that you can get caught up punching buttons instead of talking on the phone. Technology is progressing and new items are coming out. Thirty of forty years ago there was no text messaging or even Tivo on television. You had to actually pick up a regular telephone and call someone couldn’t rewind television programs. Older generations may look at new technologies as something bad, but I think it can be a good thing. Besides people losing face to face contact with each other and resorting to facebook and myspace, I think new technologies will give us more insight into the future and teach us fresh information. I agree that this generation receives a lot of information and entertainment through the internet. If I need to research a topic, I will look it up on the internet and even go to people.com to see who is gossiping about who. It is true that teens are more likely to go to college now, where as older generations college wasn’t a big deal. I also agree that teens are under intense pressure from parents to succeed in not only school but sports as well. Most parents constantly push their children to get the best grades possible and be at the top in their sport or activity. Although my mom never pushed me at sports, she always kept a close eye on my grades at school. While these things I agreeable, there are others that differ. The assumption “teens drink less alcohol and smoke fewer cigarettes” I disagree with. I know few people who do not drink and see oodles of teens who smoke cigarettes. Also, the assumption of moving back home to mom and dad’s house as a way of “safety” I disagree on. Moving back home for a while after college, I believe is a great idea because you can save a ton of money while figuring out your living situation. Last but not least, the advice I would give older generations in terms to communicating with us would be to learn how to use email and even text messaging. I would say discover the new technologies and gain knowledge of them.
